Challenge 1- For one full day (from the time you wake up until you go back to sleep), free yourself completely from carbon-producing transportation, such as cars, motorcycles, and elevators. For this challenge you may not carpool with anyone. Comment on your experience walking, biking, skating, etc., all day without the use of fossil fuels. I did not use any carbon emitting transportation at all on Sunday, and spent most of my day at home. It was not too difficult because I decided to use that day to do household errands and homework. The only problem occurred when my family was going to go to my favorite restaurant and I was not able to go. However, it was not a big deal because I just called my mom and told her to get me something to go. I did have to walk a couple of blocks to my friends house because we had to finish a school project, and I would have normally just asked my mom to drop me off in the car. Overall, no carbon emitting transportation for a day was not a difficult thing to do, but it is not easy to do every day. Considering that I ride the bus to school, ride planes to visit family, and use the car every day, not using carbon-producing transportation would be extremely difficult. However, this was an interesting experience because it allowed me to understand how much my life is dependent on carbon emitting transportation. I hope that I can decrease my reliance on carbon-producing transportation in the future.
ReplyDeleteLast Sunday, I decided to go the entire day without exerting carbon into the atmosphere. Because I live too far from school, I couldn’t try this task on a school day; it would take me at least forty-five minutes to walk to school. So, I decided to try this on a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteTo start off my day, my mom decided to join me on my adventure by walking my dog to the duck pond, which was about thirty minutes away from my house. It was actually fairly relaxing to take a slow walk, especially in the early morning when the sun was still rising and almost no cars were on the streets. It was a great time for some mother-daughter bonding. Even though it was a pretty long walk, I found that I actually wasn’t that tired. In fact, I think my dog was the most exhausted after our walk (mostly due to the fact that there were so many squirrels for her to chase).
After our walk, my mom made some brunch for my family to enjoy before leaving to go shopping. At around 2:00 I decided to walk to sonic to take advantage of happy hour. Sonic, which was right next to the school was about five miles away from my house. I didn’t want to walk alone, so I had to beg my sister to go with me. She was definitely against walking for an hour just for a drink, but I was able to convince her that it was a great use of the cool weather (and the fact that I would pay for her order).
The walk was quite boring. My sister, the annoying baby she is, kept whining and complaining about how long the distance was; I was seriously regretting making her come with me. However, when we finally reached our destination (at around 3:00), I can definitely say that it was the best slushie that I had ever had.
I definitely could not live without a car at all, but this challenge has made me realize that our society is entirely too dependent on these vehicles. Whenever possible, I think people should consider walking or biking to get to their destination, not only to protest the environment, but also for themselves as well.
For my blog challenge this six weeks I decided to not use transportation for an entire day. From the beginning I knew it was going to be a challenge since I don’t live relatively close to anything and usually drive there. Even though Coppell is fairly a small town it is still challenging to go to the library and stores without a car. I did this challenge during a weekend since it was be very difficult to do it during a school day. In the morning I didn’t need to go out so I stayed inside and did some homework. To travel I rode my bicycle which wasn’t very difficult since usually ride my cycle frequently and didn’t get tired. In the afternoon I rode my bike to the gym which helped me get in a good workout; this was helpful but it took me about 15 mins to get there. Also it started to drizzle on my way back so I had to bike in the rain which was a annoying and took me about 30 minutes. Even though it is better for the environment it is difficult since nothing is that close if I lived closer to City Hall then biking would be so much easier and actually be quicker than driving. After the gym I biked home and that was all the transportation for the day. Finally in the evening I had to get groceries so I biked to Kroger which is really close. Overall my experience was great I started to value my car and other means of transportation. My takeaway is biking would be fun if everything was in close proximity such as in a city; in Coppell everything is spaced out so its a hassle to get somewhere with a bike.
ReplyDeleteSo... I did this challenge over the weekend on the Sunday before Memorial Day. I warned my family and friends that this was occurring, so they were aware of the conditions! On this Sunday, (May 24), I pledged to not use any sort of carbon producing transportation.. even in the form of carpooling. In all honesty, this challenge was not very difficult. I was in cross country last year, and still run a lot and so running places was not really an issue for me! Although it was not very difficult for me to accomplish this challenge, I did like the designated time that I was given.. it most definitely drove me to be more avid about being outdoors that day! I even went biking with a couple of friends and made my habitual long boarding trip quite a bit longer.
